Thanksgiving is celebrated in the USA on the last Thursday of November. The night before Thanksgiving is considered the biggest bar night of the year. The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, when the Christmas shopping rush helps retailers get out of the "red" and into the "black" financially. The following Monday is known as Cyber Monday when online retailers experience a similar rush after everyone is back to work and surfing on their employers' time.
Buy Nothing Day is a protest against consumerism and, in the USA a reaction to the black Friday insanity. In the US it takes place on Black Friday, but everywhere else it is the following Saturday.
