Achilles was the son of the Goddess Thetis and the mortal King Peleus. Some legends say that Thetis attempted to make her son immortal by dipping him in the river Styx, holding onto his heel and thus leaving that one part of his body vulnerable. He was killed by a poison arrow in his heel, shot by Paris, the lover of Helen whose abduction led to the hostilities.

Achilles is also mentioned in The Argonautica.
