While the pentacle certainly existed before Pythagoras, he was probably the first to expound on it as a symbol of the golden mean(who came up with the elemental correlation, I have no idea, but it has always seemed too much of a stretch to be credible anyway, so I don't care.). It wasn't invented, it was observed. It correlates to the orbit of Venus as observed from Earth.
