Sometimes people light a candle and let it burn for several days- if you do this, it's best to use a candle specifically for this purpose, like this 7 day candle. Most candles burn out after a couple of hours and the protective jar reduces the fire hazard slightly.
But, you don't have to leave a candle burning for several days for a spell to work. In fact, for setting intentions, I think it works better if you light it for say, 20 minutes a day for several days and sit with the candle meditating on your intention for that time and then snuff it, repeat nightly for the designated time. It's also safer.
