I don't understand why you think it's a familiar if you also think you have to gain its trust. If it's your familiar, it will already feel… familiar. But, familiars generally choose the same shape with each incarnation. I am not sure why, maybe it's their own personal preference, maybe they are choosing the shape that best appeals to their human partner- that's probably most likely, magic tends to work that way. Cats and dogs are probably popular for the same reason they are popular pets, and because they are popular pets(and thus, easiest to deal with in general). Beyond that, I'm not sure there is any significance in the shape.
