Knot magic or cord magic has been around for a long time (mentions of it in ancient Greek writings). The knot represents the spell and the spell is either cast so that it exists as long as the knot exists and is thus broken when the knot is untied or, more usually, bound to the knot so that when the knot is untied the spell is released. You can use knot magic for just about any sort of spell you can imagine. I honestly can't tell you what this is, but usually, if the knot is given to a person, they are meant to release the spell when they need it by untying the knot. It's not usually a curse in this situation (unless it's a curse against that person's enemies). Usually if you are using the knot to curse or bind another person, you keep control of the knot, not turn it over to them. So, in short, I have no idea.
