I think Wicca has a specific altar setup, and I'm not Wiccan so I can't really give you all the details on that. That's one of the pages in the books I tend to skip over, but just about any book of Wicca, and half the books of Witchcraft have a diagram somewhere in the front telling you how you're supposed to set up your altar. I do have several altars, and I can tell you about them, but they are not going to match the diagram.
An altar serves one of two purposes. It is either a place where you have your shrines to your Gods and present offerings and prayers and such on a regular basis, or it is your workspace for your magical work. I personally have a main altar with the head of my Pantheon (in my case Zeus and Hera), their offering dishes, candles, and various sacred items, such as my son's crystals, my handfasting cord, and pieces of paper on which we've written requests and such. I also have smaller shrines throughout the house for various other Gods, and a larger ancestor altar- pictures of my beloved dead, a porcelain skull, my Gods of the dead (Hades and Persephone and also Hecate), various items that remind me of my beloved dead, and a book in which my family history is written, and, of course, candles for lighting when I talk to them.
The second type of altar is a working altar. This, I set up as I need it. My tools are kept in a drawer in the credenza that houses my main altar, but I only take them out when I use them. I have an altar cloth, a hand scythe, an incense burner, a wand, a cauldron, and candle holders and various paraphernalia(oils, crystals, dried herbs, beads, bags, ribbons, cords, feathers, bars of wax, needles and thread, colored markers, you know, "craft" supplies.. When I'm about to do a spell, I spread out my altar cloth either on the kitchen table or on a particular stump in my back yard and I lay out my tools on that. I don't lay them out in any particular fashion. I only bring what I need and I lay them all out in a manner that best suits the task at hand and when I'm done, I clean them and put them away until next time.
