This enters "new age" territory rather than witchcraft, but I'll do my best.
The Theta state is, as far as I understand it, a name for the trance state that witches, shamans and channels enter to do our various work, usually involving the gathering of knowledge, either from the spirit world, or the collective unconscious or our own subconscious. I personally do this to Journey to gather wisdom and also when I am allowing a God to "ride" me during ritual. I use a drum beat to help induce it, but I also use various meditation techniques, I am not sure that the drum beat would do it on its own, though I do know that when people are dancing to that drum beat they can slip into trance quite unexpectedly, but they usually come open to the experience.
Looking at this article http://www.toolsforwellness.com/brainstates.html I would say that I am in the Alpha state when doing divination using tools, especially for other people, and maybe also when just giving and intuitive "reading" and the Theta state when I am channeling for ritual or doing journey work- though the descriptions don't really match up with my experience, I'm categorizing for the sake of discussion. I don't like to interact with other people when I am in a deep trance, though during ritual the priest guides me with his voice. But the astral state is perhaps somewhere between Delta and Theta. While my awareness is detached, it is certainly still there and I am conscious of myself taking note of any disturbance and deciding whether or not to "wake up". Whereas, when I'm asleep, I am mostly unaware of things going around me and I automatically deal with things like itches and temperature issues by kicking off or pulling on the blankets without even noticing. This is interesting to think about.
I don't know if that's helpful or not, but the article is interesting and offers practical exercises for each state. It also confirms what I already knew, that a quick, steady drumbeat can ease your passage into the trance state. It always delights me when science catches up with magick. I've done some meditation with bineural beats, but I prefer the drums, call me old fashioned.
Here's another article on the subject http://www.finerminds.com/mind-power/brain-waves/
