Enochian magick is a system of ceremonial magick based on the writings of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley who claimed to have contacted the angel Ave several times between 1582-1589, taught them the Enochian language and gave them the key to the esoteric secrets contained within the Books of Enoch. Mr. Kelly peered into a crystal shewstone to receive the visions and Dr. Dee recorded his descriptions of the visions in his journals.
The system of magic was not known as Enochian by Dr. Dee and Mr. Kelly, they referred to it as Angelic. The name "Enochian" was later applied to the system because, according to the lore, the language used to perform the magical operations was last spoken by the Biblical figure Enoch. The system uses the Enochian language, purported to be the language spoken by angelic beings, to summon and control various spirit entities. Sigils and complicated magic squares are also used by this system. The Enochian system seem to be influenced by, or at least has some similarities to, the work of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and Johann Reuchlin and some older Grimoires including The Heptameron, The Book of Soyga and The Lesser Key of Solomon.
Dr. Dee and Mr. Kelly do not seem to have experimented much with the system with the exception of the creation of a single talisman. However, research and experimentation by subsequent Magickians, including Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, Aleister Crowley, Dr. Thomas Rudd, Elias Ashmole, William Wynn Westcott and Isreal Regardie as well as various members of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn further developed and refined the system.
